To celebrate the millions of cat owners around the country that make good green choices for their cats, home and environment this summer, Yesterday’s News, a cat litter brand made with recycled paper products, is launching the “Rethink Litter!” recycling campaign and asking people to pledge to recycle two paper products a week for twelve weeks. For every pledge received, the cat litter brand will make a $1 donation (up to $5,000) to Keep America Beautiful – an organization focused on litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling. In addition, the Yesterday’s News brand will make a $10,000 donation to the nonprofit, and anyone taking the pledge will be entered into a weekly sweepstakes to receive $50 gift cards to Giftback.com. Pledges can be made at facebook.com/yesterdaysnews.
Did you know?
- Americans are recycling most at home, rather than work. Nearly three quarters (72%) report that they recycle most at home, with just 6 percent saying they recycle most at work.
- There is confusion about which items can and cannot be recycled. While the majority of Americans understand that cell phones (78%) and motor oil (67%) can be recycled, many are unaware that other, less typical items such as trophies (36%) and crayons (36%) can also be recycled. You should check with your local recycler or municipality to learn which materials can be recycled in your area.
- Cat owners are more likely than those without a cat at home to say that they recycle, with 91 percent of cat owners saying that they recycle compared to 85 percent of non-cat owners.
What can you do?
- To increase your recycling efforts at the office – and encourage your colleagues to do the same – start a Green Team or send out funny e-cards with recycling tips each week – you’ll make your co-workers laugh while also jumpstarting their efforts to reduce your environmental impact!
- Don’t forget to bring a separate recycling bag to your summer picnic or party – it’s easier to separate recyclables before you get home. And, be sure to clearly label the recycling bag to prevent contamination with food and other trash.
- When possible, carpool to summer activities. Not only will you reduce pollution due to auto emissions, but you will squeeze in some quality conversation time with those you might not always get to talk to AND save money on gas!
- Spend a Sunday afternoon cleaning out your garage, basement or attic, and make a pile of those items you’re unsure about and take the time to double check either online or with your local recycling center – you might have a whole bunch of hidden recyclable treasures!
