Summer with our pets is a fun time of year for our entire family. We usually just pack up the truck with our two pups, Kasper (American Eskimo) and Koko Bean (Pomeranian) in the passenger seats. Kasper prefers to call dibbs on the front seat while Koko insists on a nice lap to sit in. No kennels for our family, we stay together as a family and explore together! First stop on our trip? To the nearest Dairy Queen for mini vanilla cones for the dogs of course! It’s the highlight of their trip.. well.. unless one of them throws up half way between here and there. We usually travel down south to visit my sister’s family in Redwood Falls, MN. The dogs love to explore the trails, visit the park and see the falls. Kasper chases the bees and bugs, while Koko just seems to take everything in stride. They enjoy the fresh air and we enjoy their company. We travel as a family and that means our pet family as well!!

We’ve had several great summer trips with our dogs in tow but the most memorable was a trip to Lake Tahoe last year to celebrate 5 years of marriage. Our three dogs, Tommy, Polly, and Beggs, had been attendants at our Lake Tahoe wedding and it was wonderful to bring them all back for what we knew would be the last time for Tommy and Polly, who were old and who have since gone to the Rainbow Bridge. We stayed in a lovely vacation home on the edge of a national forest which (we soon found out) a bear called home. We encountered the bear several times during our trip (fortunately, he avoided dogs) and even got a picture of his face. We kept being concerned that Polly, our fearless Border Collie who loved to tease large dogs, would think he was an extra-large dog and try to tease him. Fortunately, she never got the chance. Tommy and Polly have since passed on and we just adopted a new puppy from a pet rescue organization so our family has now changed but we will always remember our last trip to Lake Tahoe as a family when it was Kim, Barbara, Tommy, Polly, and Beggs.

Well, we tried to just go two hours away with my almost 2 year old son and my rat terrier dog.My son was getting his diaper changed in the car in a parking lot and I was yelling at the dog to stop scratching me leg and I forgot my son was not diapered and he peed all over me,so much pee that the car was so flooded and so was I!!! It was just a terrible trip. The dog was not happy either because he too was covered in tinkle

We traveled from Florida to Connecticut and by car with our beagle 2 summers ago. We had to make a lot of stops of course so that he could do his business, but all together it wasn’t bad. He laid in the back of the car and would come up front to stick his nose out of the window every so often. He loves car rides so he’s up for a road trip anytime.

Last Sept in 2009, we traveled all 4 dogs from , MA to CA.
A month long adventure on the road !!
We own a class A motorhome we bought in 2005 just to accomodate traveling with our dogs.
We have dog friends all across the USA and we stop to visit.
    What great fun….!!
We also take them all to dog shows..and meet up with great people from all over the country..
To many adventures to go into but so far our dogs have traversed 43 states in that motorhome….so many great times and new adventures !!
They are now well seasoned travelers !!

When we took our female dog Suzie on her first long distance road trip,
she loved it! She became the “motel princess” who inspected the laundry
room each morning, got extra pets and treats from the staff, and loved
the two beds in the room. Of course we have bought a wonderful soft sided
crate for her-but she was seldom alone and hardly used it except for
eating dinner. I expected her to learn how to order from room service after
being gone a week. Her next trip wasn’t so much fun (for her) since we
picked up a baby brother at the same time. I think she would have preferred leaving him behind at that point even though they are best buddies now.
    Pet friendly hotels are WONDERFUL!!!
