Pets and allergies
Humans aren’t the only ones who suffer from seasonal, food, and other types of allergies. “Just about every mammal can get allergies,” says Lisa Troutman, D.V.M., a veterinarian with the Food and Drug Administration. “So can hamsters, rabbits, birds, and some other pets.”
Although there is not a cure for allergies, there are some simple things that you can do to help your pet feel more comfortable (and help the people in your home with allergies as well).
- Keep it clean! It’s important to keep things clean, especially to dust and vacuum regularly. Regular bedding changes, washed in hot water, is also important. Washing water and food bowls, and keeping your pet bathed regularly, as allergens can get trapped in their coats, can also help.
- Consider a HEPA filter. There are many great options for filtering out allergens, some of which can be added to your heating and cooling system. You can also buy vacuums with HEPA filters, which will help everyone in your home feel better.
- Take note. One of the most important things you can do is to notice what aggravates your pet’s allergies the most. Especially with food allergies, be sure that you are taking note of what has changed in your pet’s diet.
- Talk to your veterinarian. There are options for pets who suffer from allergies, including shots. Obviously this option may not be needed for every pet, but if you pet really suffers because of allergens, it’s important to speak with your vet.
As we move into the spring season, it’s a good time to watch your pets for signs of seasonal allergies. Signs include itching, sneezing, nose and eye discharge, and itchy eyes.
