Animals are Veterans Too!
Today is Veterans Day, a day that we celebrate and thank the human heroes who fight to keep our country safe and our freedom’s intact. Thank you! We truly appreciate you!
But let’s not forget the amazing animal heroes today. Animals have always played an important role in serving our country. From dogs to pigeons, they work with and for their animal counterparts, doing things that only they can do.
Today, dogs are being deployed to help reduce the stress of soldiers serving in Iraq. A great organization called VetDogs is helping make it possible. From the site:
Says Major Stacie Caswell, commander of the 85th Medical Detachment, “Dogs have been the unsung heroes of our war efforts. Bringing therapy dogs into Iraq will take dogs to the next level on the battlefield. The therapy dogs will be another method that our Combat Stress teams can use to break down mental health stigma and assist soldiers.”
Dogs have always played an important role in assisting their human counterparts, and a wonderful organization called “Vietnam War Dog Handlers” was put together by soldiers to honor the memory of their dog partners.
And in more recent news regarding war dogs, I am sure that you remember the story of Ratchet. Luckily Ratchet was able to come to the United States and reunite with the solider who rescued him. There is a wonderful organization helping soliders reunite with the animals they rescue on the battlefield. It’s called Operation Baghdad Pups, and their goal is to make sure “No Buddy” gets left behind.
I am sure that anyone who has worked closely with an animal for any reason knows just how wonderful they are. I can’t think of a better partner to have during the worst possible time, war. So today when you think of our Veterans, take a little time to think of the animal veterans too!
