About the book:
The animal rights movement has reached a tipping point. No longer a fringe extremist cause, it has become a social concern that leading members of society endorse and young people embrace. From Michael Vick’s dog fighting scandal to the incredible success of the bestselling Skinny Bitch veggie diet book, animal rights issues have hit the headlines—and are being championed by students and senators, pop stars and producers, and actors and activists.
Don’t you want to be part of the conversation? In Thanking the Monkey, Karen Dawn covers pets, fur, fashion, food, animal testing, activism, and more. But as the title playfully suggests, this isn’t like any previous animal rights book. Thanking the Monkey is light on lectures meant to make you feel guilty if you’re not a leather-eschewing vegan. It lets you have fun as you learn about Paul McCartney’s love of lambs and why Prince won’t wear wool. You’ll meet Fall Out Boy’s Andy Hurley and Pete Wentz—and their favorite traveling companion, Hemingway, Pete’s dog. You’ll read why Natalie Portman, Alicia Silverstone, and so many of those skinny but not bitchy actresses won’t eat or wear animals. And you’ll laugh over dozens of cartoons from Dan Piraro’s Bizzaro to other animal-friendly comics.
This fun primer for a smart and socially committed generation delivers some serious surprises in the form of facts and figures about the treatment of animals. Yes, it will shock you with tales of primates still used in animal testing on nicotine or killed for oven cleaner. But it will also let you lighten up and laugh a little as we work out how to do a better job of thanking the monkey.

Hi, I am glad you brought this book to my attention. I grew up in a family of animal lovers. My brother was a veterinarian and we have had some very unusual pets. We also had more throw aways than anyone I have ever known. It is good to know that there is some humor in this book. Please enter me in your drawing. Many thanks,Cindi
Sounds like an interesting book — I’d like to read a moderate & humorous take on these issue. Thanks for the nice giveaway.
I’d love to read this! Sounds like it would be much more lighthearted than books like Diet for A New America and whatnot.
I have learned so much since I joined PETA’s site, and am wanting to do more financially but am not able to at this time. I have been taking feral cats to be spade and neutered and then released back into the woods around me. I still leave food outside if they come back around, of course the racoons and skunks eat a lot of it.
I would really appreciate winning a copy of this book! I might learn more ways that I can help save more animals!
I would love this for my older brother who is having a birthday soon…we are definitely lovers of all animals.
Thanks.
I love animals! We have four dogs, five cats, and one horse. My dream is to open my own all animal rescue/shelter. All our animals have been rescues which we have kept as our own. In the past I had rescued many dogs and cats and taken to the vet to get spade or neutered and then found good wonderful homes for them. I would love doing this again someday…We don’t have a local rescue/shelter within 20 miles of here. Which is really horrible. There are so many animals that need our help just in my area. It makes me cry most of the time when I see dogs running around and I know that they will go to the local vet just to only live three days before being put to sleep. They should be treated more like children in some respects. I would love this book, it would be a great addition to my other books. Thank you!!!!
I think ths would be great to read, I am into “todays topics” and this is probably one problem not everyone really knows about, including me! I think this would give me insite to this issue and more so pass on the information to my children.
I am intrigued by your review of the book. Too many books are overly heavy-handed when it comes to discussing issues. This sounds like an amusing book that will inform but not condemn the reader.
I would enjoy this book and enjoy passing it on to others to read. It sounds like a book to reach a lot of readers.
This looks like a fun new way of teaching about Animal rights (Or the basic treatment of them…) It will be a relief from the previous books I’ve read. (Mostly just legalities concerning animal rights in the dusty section of my local library!)
I’m studying to be an Animal Cruelty Investigator, so this would be helpful if I could win it!
Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
Alex
After all, Homo Sapiens are animals too…..lets hope there arent intelligent aliens out there who would treat us the way we treat the “lesser” animals. It is time Slaughter houses were no longer part of our culture.
My 12 yr old daughter LOVES animals, she’s a vegetarian and loves to read. I’d give this book to her, thank you!
we love animals and we are flexitarians very rarely eating meat so this would be a great book for us as we keep moving towards vegetarianism
I am a vegetarian and have championed animal rights for years. I think this would be a very interesting book.
This sounds like a fun and enlightening read! I’m already a vegetarian, and I’d love to learn how to do more for our animal friends!
I’ve been doing things for animal rights since I was very little, would love to read this book. Yes I was that kid that refused to dissect frogs & pigs in middle school
After my argument for not doing it, I actually managed A’s on both projects as well, lol.
What a great blog! Thanks for speaking for those without a voice. . . hope I win this book, looks like an interesting read.
Great website that I just found. Excellent book to make the public more aware. If I don’t win, I intend to purchase and share. Thank you!!
This sounds like a good book.
My in-laws were visiting this past weekend and they just don’t understand how I can love my animals so much. I was irritated over a few comments they made, but in the end they lose. They have no pets to love.
This sounds like an educational and exciting read!
Thanks for having such a timely and considerate giveaway!
I’d really like to do some reading on this subject. My daughter turned vegan this past summer and I’m learning so much.
I read some magazine showing a study about kids who grew up with pets versus those that did not. It showed the a kid with a pet was a much more rounded adult. More compassionate, tolerant of others, etc. For all of us with animals, we know this to be very true
My dog is a member of the family and is treated just as good as the humans in our family. She even has a real mattress of her own instead of a doggie bed. I sure hope more people think about the way they treat animal souls.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

This is great. I didn’t even know you had this blog, like my pets blog nobody knows about. I’ll be sure to add it to my RSS reader.
