Seal hunt trial.
Meghan sent me this information. Very interesting!
“Today, five representatives of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International stand trial in the Magdalen Islands, accused of violating their observation permits during the 2006 Canadian commercial seal hunt. The HSUS and HSI observe the seal hunt each year to witness and document the killing, and to facilitate journalists, scientists and parliamentarians to do the same.
This case is the most serious step yet in a continuing effort by the Canadian government to draw a curtain around the annual slaughter of seals and block independent parties from chronicling the hunt. Currently, the federal government is attempting to amend the Marine Mammal Regulations to further restrict observation of the seal hunt.
It is also selective prosecution. In nine years, The HSUS and HSI have videotaped more than 700 violations of Canadian Marine Mammal violations by sealers (such things as leaving injured animals on the ice to suffer). We’ve given this evidence to the Canadian authorities, and not one sealer has been charged as a consequence.
You can read more, see video from past seal hunts, and read supporter statements from around the world, at The Humane Society International Canada.“
