Rex in the City!

Filed Under (giveaways) by Aimee on 29-10-2007

I have a copy of the book Rex in the City up for grabs! Here is a little more about it, and how you can win the book for yourself.

Lee Harrington, a frequent contributer to the Bark magazine, wrote a wonderfully witty and tender memoir about rescuing and abused shelter dog and rehabilitating him in her tony NYC apartment. During the process she went from glamorous downtown hipster to dog lover, thoroughly obsessed with the health and happiness of her dog. The book, Rex and the City, is now available in paperback and Lee is going on tour to promote adoptions and the book. Her tour (virtual and old-fashioned) includes inviting organizations to bring dogs in need of adoptions to her signings and donating a portion of the proceeds to the Mayor’s Alliance, a group dedicated to making NYC no-kill. You can read more about the book at www.rexandthecity.net, though be forewarned the publisher thought it was chick lit instead of dog lit.

Don’t you love that her book tour is also going to help dogs find homes? I think it’s great and so nice that she is donating a portion of proceeds to help NYC become no-kill. Not only that but her book is a lovely testament to what can happen when people decide to rescue.

If you want to win the book, leave a comment on this post before midnight November 2nd. I will draw a random number from the entries (please be sure to fill in the email field so I can notify you if you win).

**This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to Erin, who is the winner.**

The animal victims of the California fires.

As an animal lover, the animals, both wild and domestic, always come to my mind when a disaster strikes. The good news is that most people were able to evacuate with their pets, but there were still many animals left to fend for themselves. The Humane Society has been working very hard on their behalf. You can read all about their efforts on Wayne’s blog and consider making a donation as well if you can! :)

Seal hunt trial.

Filed Under (news) by Aimee on 19-10-2007

Meghan sent me this information. Very interesting!

“Today, five representatives of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International stand trial in the Magdalen Islands, accused of violating their observation permits during the 2006 Canadian commercial seal hunt. The HSUS and HSI observe the seal hunt each year to witness and document the killing, and to facilitate journalists, scientists and parliamentarians to do the same.

This case is the most serious step yet in a continuing effort by the Canadian government to draw a curtain around the annual slaughter of seals and block independent parties from chronicling the hunt. Currently, the federal government is attempting to amend the Marine Mammal Regulations to further restrict observation of the seal hunt.

It is also selective prosecution. In nine years, The HSUS and HSI have videotaped more than 700 violations of Canadian Marine Mammal violations by sealers (such things as leaving injured animals on the ice to suffer). We’ve given this evidence to the Canadian authorities, and not one sealer has been charged as a consequence.

You can read more, see video from past seal hunts, and read supporter statements from around the world, at The Humane Society International Canada.

Book Review: What Pet’s Do While You’re at Work

Filed Under (reviews) by Aimee on 16-10-2007

This is a cute little book that would be a perfect stocking stuffer for an animal lover. It features animals doing funny things, with each photo having a humorous explanation for what is happening in the photo. Some of the photos are just too funny to believe, with great moments caught at just the right time.

The only thing I wish were different? I wish that the photos were better resolution, but even with that flaw the book is a hoot.
