Book Review: Pet Food Nation

This book comes at a very interesting point in time, with all the recent pet food recalls, and sadly the deaths of many pets, cooking at home for your pet makes good sense. This book introduces the reasons why we may want to cook at home for our pets, as well as how to do it.

We have been cooking for Baby at the recommendation of her vet for several months now. It’s not hard, and it turned her liver problem right around. She has dropped the extra pounds she was carrying around, and she is a lot more playful. You can just see that she feels better on a home cooked diet.

The book has a very helpful section about what foods are good for dogs and cats and which foods are not. A lot of people know that chocolate is deadly, but aren’t aware that grapes are too. The book also includes recipes for those who choose to cook at home, as well as tips for those who choose to buy commercial pet food.

It does focus only on cats and dogs. However, I know that home cooking for other pets, such as birds and ferrets, is also good for them. Overall, this book is a nice, short introduction to why you would want to cook at home, as well as how to do it. I would check with your vet first before switching (as they can offer advice for your particular pet).
