I am so excited to announce this giveaway. Someone is going to be the lucky winner of a Meerkat Manor prize package!
To enter, leave a message on this post between now and August 10th. I will draw a random number on the 10th, which is the same day as the big premiere of Meerkat Manor 3. Be sure to fill in your email address in the comment (emails are not shown), so I can notify you if you are the winner.
The prize includes a large Meerkat Stuffed Animal, an Animal Planet Hat, T-shirt, poster, and an AKC Dog Championship DVD. This is an awesome prize (oh how I wish I was getting one myself)! What are you waiting for? Leave a comment!
Today I recieved an email from Jane, and had to share right away. Jane is part of a great non-profit that helps save shelter animals.
“I work with a 501c3 non-profit rescue group called Saving Shelter Pets. We are a small, Internet-based group, with members and supporters all over the country (and a few international supporters too!). Our work addresses a number of domestic companion animal welfare issues. We are not a licensed rescue ourselves, but we facilitate rescues of dogs and cats in high-kill shelters, get them vetted and into boarding for quarantine, then send them to pre-screened no-kill rescues where they can be adopted into a loving, forever home. We also have an active Spay/Neuter program. We are working with one county in a rural area of Georgia to provide certificates for low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for pets belonging to low-income families. Also, we just recently helped sponsor a mobile spay/neuter unit at a humane society in a rural area of Ohio, where over 80 animals were fixed in a single weekend! We have a program called Puppy Promises that keeps unwanted puppies from being turned into a shelter and offers them a rescue instead - PLUS it spays the mother dog (which we pay for) so she can’t have any other litters.”
They need your help to win a very cool contest! The contest winner recieves a grant of up to $10,000. What makes this contest so special is that the winners are chosen by the highest number of donations, not the highest donation totals. So, just making the small $10 donation could put Saving Shelter Pets on the road to winning! It’s amazing what they could do with the $10,000, including spay and neuter for 200 animals! Click here to visit their homepage and learn more (the donate button is on the homepage too, and you can donate via Paypal too).
This book comes at a very interesting point in time, with all the recent pet food recalls, and sadly the deaths of many pets, cooking at home for your pet makes good sense. This book introduces the reasons why we may want to cook at home for our pets, as well as how to do it.
We have been cooking for Baby at the recommendation of her vet for several months now. It’s not hard, and it turned her liver problem right around. She has dropped the extra pounds she was carrying around, and she is a lot more playful. You can just see that she feels better on a home cooked diet.
The book has a very helpful section about what foods are good for dogs and cats and which foods are not. A lot of people know that chocolate is deadly, but aren’t aware that grapes are too. The book also includes recipes for those who choose to cook at home, as well as tips for those who choose to buy commercial pet food.
It does focus only on cats and dogs. However, I know that home cooking for other pets, such as birds and ferrets, is also good for them. Overall, this book is a nice, short introduction to why you would want to cook at home, as well as how to do it. I would check with your vet first before switching (as they can offer advice for your particular pet).
If you have been watching the national news, you have probably heard by now about Micheal Vick and the horrors of dog fighting. It’s hard to believe that any company would stand by a sponor after the horrible and sickening things they did to their dogs. And I don’t just mean the fighting, but what they did to losing dogs too.
Click here to read all about it, and please consider adding your name to the many who are speaking up to Nike and the NFL. The only brightside to the story is that having such a high profile person involved has brought the horrific sport of dogfighting to the attention of the media. Hopefully this will insipire people to do something to help stop the so-called sport.
When we last left off…
It wasn’t too long ago that the Whiskers meerkat family was embroiled in a fierce battle against their biggest rivals, the Commandos. Last we saw the Whiskers, Mozart’s pups had been killed by the Commandos during a burrow raid, and the Whiskers were facing a long harsh winter.
If you love watching Animal Planet (as I do) then you have probably watched a show called Meerkat Manor. I have learned a lot about meerkat society and the way they interact.
About the ‘Kats…
Standing tall at on only one foot high, the meerkat is a small member of the mongoose family that thrives in one of the driest places on Earth – the Kalahari Desert. On the surface, the meerkats seem like adorable creatures, but do their cute façades mask their true colors? These highly social creatures are precocious and tough enough to send a cape cobra slinking into a hole.
Meerkat Manor 3 is coming soon! The new season will start on August 10th. You can learn more about the show, and about the Whisker Family by visiting the fan page here.
Which brings us to the present-day Kalahari Desert…
Now, kicked out of their home, Flower, the matriarch of the Whiskers clan, must lead her brood through a perilous journey to mark and settle into their new manor, survive the weather and stave off the threat of predation. The Whiskers must face new rivalry posed by their neighbors from hell, the Zappa gang, and Flower is determined to lead her brood to victory no matter what it takes! And, the plot thickens when the fighting persists within the Whiskers’ own inner circle. Ever the dysfunctional family, the Whiskers find themselves involved in confrontation, control, love affairs and more drama than ever! With daughters sleeping around and sisters fighting over the same main man, it’s no wonder that it’s a slippery slope surviving desert life. Fans will see who lives, who dies and which ‘kat winds up as top dog.
